Ledyard K-9 to get bulletproof vest thanks to fundraising efforts
Thanks to a number of generous donations to an online fundraiser, the Ledyard Police Department K9 Lambeau will soon be receiving a new bullet- and stabproof vest.
Ledyard Citizens Helping Animals In Need (C.H.A.I.N.) was responsible for starting the fundraiser, which aimed to raise $1,100 to cover the cost of the vest. The money was raised in a few short days around Christmas, with two major $500 donations coming from Dog Scout Troop 188 and Tony and Krista Sabilia, who represented Fastsigns of Waterford.
C.H.A.I.N. is hoping to hold a ceremony in two months when the vest arrives. It will be embroidered with the words "Be Safe Our Hero. Thank You For Your Service."
The vest is supplied through Vested Interest in K9s, a non-profit that provides body armor for K9 officers in dangerous situations.
After the initial money for the vest was raised, C.H.A.I.N. will use money raised above and beyond the $1,100 to go toward a heat alarm for the canines.
"A heat alarm for the K-9 Unit (ensures) that Lambeau or any other K-9 with the Ledyard Police Department never has to be in danger of being in a hot car in the event of engine or air conditioner failure," C.H.A.I.N. wrote on Lambeau's fundraising page.
