NS Girl Scouts win Gold Awards

Justine Gouvin, left, and Kylie Garcia, members of Girl Scout Troop 63108 in North Stonington, earned their Gold Awards at a ceremony May 1.

Two senior Girl Scouts from Troop 63108 in North Stonington earned their Gold Awards May 1 at the North Stonington Congregational Church. The Gold Award is the highest honor in Girl Scouts.

Justine Gouvin, a senior at Wheeler High School, created a memory garden for Emily Zinz, a 2014 Wheeler High School graduate who died of cancer two days after graduation. The garden, located at the high school, provides a space for reflection and remembering Emily. Justine will be attending Plymouth College in New Hampshire in the fall.

Kylie Garcia, also a senior at Wheeler, ran Craft Connections, an eight-week program at the Wheeler Library to bring senior citizens and elementary school students together for reading and crafts. She will be attending SUNY Stony Brook in the fall.

Both have been involved with Girl Scouts for 12 years and earned their Silver Awards by making quilts for the Linus Project and pillow cases for Kids with Cancer.
