East Lyme Public Library launches BINGO game for summer reading

This summer, the library is offering a bingo game to encourage adults to read a wide variety of books and to check out the library’s resources.

Summertime not only means reading for children — but for grown-ups too.

East Lyme Public Library is offering a summer reading BINGO game for adults. Each square on the BINGO card, represents a book to read or an item to do.

For example, readers are challenged to read books that have been turned into a movie or books that are set in New England, among other categories. They are also asked to complete tasks like attend a library program, check out a magazine online or discover a database. Readers who finish a row and bring it to the library to be stamped will receive a raffle ticket.

“We wanted to make sure the public is aware of all of the stuff available in our library,” said Radha Thanabal, an assistant coordinator at the East Lyme Public Library.

She said that the town’s population grows in the summertime and many residents have enjoyed a “friendly competition” of earning raffle tickets for reading a certain number of books.

“It’s really fun and a lot of grown-ups enjoy it,” she said.

This year, the library introduced the BINGO game as a new approach to encourage readers to “leave their comfort zone and try something new,” she said.

The BINGO cards are available at the library, where there is also a display with book suggestions. Library patrons can also download a BINGO card on the library’s website.

The library will also be coming to the beach this summer.

Tara Borden, assistant director of the East Lyme Public Library, plans to go to McCook’s Beach and Hole-in-the-Wall Beach with information about services available at the library, from museum passes for rainy days to e-Books and e-Magazines.

Borden said the library is trying to reach different people who may not know what the library has to offer.

“It’s important, because we need to go where people are,” said Borden. “We need to get out there where people are having fun doing their thing and bring the idea that there’s another fun place to go in town.”
