Deadline for veterans exemptions in Stonington is Sept. 30

Stonington -- The Tax Assessor’s Office is reminding residents the last filing day for various veteran exemptions for the October 2016 grand list is Sept. 30.

Applicants who have not done so must file an honorable discharge (DD214) or letter from their commanding officer if they are active duty with the Town Clerk’s Office. To receive an exemption, a veteran must have served 90 or more cumulative days during wartime, except if the war lasted less than 90 days.

Active duty residents are entitled to an exemption of one motor vehicle in addition to the veteran’s exemption. Forms and additional information are at www.stonington-ct.gov under the Department of Assessment.

Disabled veterans that have established their eligibility for exemption are no longer required to file an annual statement from the Veterans’ Administration unless there is a change in the percentage of disability or they are over 65 years of age.

If a married veteran has a total 2015 income of $42,900 or less or a single veteran has an income of $35,200 or less they may apply for an additional exemption. The last day to file for this exemption is Oct. 1, 2016.

Non-resident active duty servicemen, on military orders stationed in Connecticut, may apply for an exemption of motor vehicles under the Federal Soldiers and Sailors Relief Act.

Anyone with questions can call the Department of Assessment at (860) 535-5098 or visit the office in town hall weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
