Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut’s first “Bankers Build” was held May 18 at 7 Killeen Road in Montville, with executives from 10 regional financial instutitions helping launch the affordable-housing organization’s 75th home-building project.

“It was the best way to express our appreciation for all their contributions,” said Terri O’Rourke, executive director of the local Habitat, which is celebrating its 30th year.

The property was donated by Liberty Bank, and the new home should be completed by Thanksgiving or Christmas.

“These little ranches go up pretty quick,” O’Rourke said.

Nearly two dozen banks have partnered with the local Habitat over the years, providing $1.3 million in gifts and $1 million in financing.

Bankers helped lift two walls on one of the hottest days in May. Represented were officials from Bank of America, Charter Oak Federal Credit Union, Chelsea Groton Bank, Dime Bank, Eastern Savings Bank, Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston, Liberty Bank, Peoples United Bank, Putnam Bank and The Savings Institute.

Thomas A. Borner, chief executive of Putnam Bank, was the only CEO represented at the build, but he wasn’t about to complain about the heat.

“It’s better than cold and rainy,” he said.
