Stonington to hold Aug. 29 workshop on Old Mystic zoning

Stonington — The town’s Planning Department and Economic Development Commission are continuing their conversations with residents in different parts of town to see what changes they would like to see made to the town’s decades-old zoning regulations.

In recent months, the department has held similar forums in Pawcatuck and Mystic, which are leading in some cases to proposals to update zoning regulations. This time, Old Mystic will be the subject.

The two groups will hold a forum at 6 p.m. Aug. 29 at the Old Mystic Fire Station No. 1, at 21 North Stonington Road. The forum will focus on the existing CS-5 commercial zoning district on Main Street in Old Mystic from Haley’s Way to just south of Mill Street.

In announcing the workshop, the planning department pointed out the town’s 2015 Plan of Conservation and Development identified several opportunities to update the regulations, which mainly date from the 1960s and '70s.

Among those opportunities are simplifying regulations to mitigate approval risk, “contemporize uses to what residents and property owners want and need to realize better value” and demystify the approval process.

“This conversation will provide community members with a chance to express concerns and opinions regarding the existing zoning regulations as well as ideas to shape these regulations in the future,” the announcement stated.
