Marcia Gipstein of Groton received the 2017 Jacqueline B. Nixon Community Service Award in August for her nine-year commitment to restoring the Ledge Light lighthouse, earning a $1,000 donation to the Ledge Light Foundation in her honor.

Groton Utilities named the award after Nixon’s death in 2004 to honor her commitment to the community, including running a food pantry at her home for 24 years.

Gipstein was nominated for the award by her husband, Todd, who is president of the Ledge Light Foundation.

In a release, he said Marcia regularly put in 40 hours of volunteer work a week to restore the light, establish the museum inside the lighthouse and run tours.

She was also the organizer of the lighthouse’s 2009 Centennial Gala, which raised enough money to start the museum and begin funding some of the restoration work.

In addition to serving as treasurer of the foundation’s board of directors and co-writing the application for ownership of the lighthouse, Gipstein served as the co-president of the Eastern Point Property Owners Association and a member of the Eastern Point Historical Commission.
