New London police investigate fatal shooting
New London — Police Saturday night were still investigating an afternoon shooting in which a young man was killed.
Police said they found the victim, whom they had not identified Saturday night, with a gunshot wound to the head in a basement apartment at 4 Orchard St.
The man was pronounced dead by medics at the scene.
Police and emergency vehicles responded to a call placed at 3:13 p.m. City Police were assisted by Connecticut State Connecticut State Police-Eastern District Major Crime Squad. The New London States Attorney's Office also responded to investigate the incident. The investigation remains active.
New London police said at the scene that the public was not at risk in the aftermath of the shooting.
Police declined to answer further questions, and it wasn't clear whether there was a suspect.
As a light snow fell, some neighbors gathered late Saturday afternoon outside their apartments, overlooking the scene, which police had cordoned off with yellow tape. Police later covered the exterior door to the basement apartment.
A customer sitting at the adjacent Montauk House restaurant recalled how a man had come running out of the apartment where the shooting had occurred and told those in the restaurant to call the police. The customer did not wish to be identified.
Police had secured the scene for more than an hour when a young woman arrived and subsequently broke into hysterics after learning from neighbors about the death.
