East Lyme — Town police arrested a Niantic man Tuesday and charged him with assaulting and detaining a woman.

Police said Keith Rochefort, 33, pulled the woman to the ground by wired earphones she was wearing around her neck. She told police Rochefort put his foot and hand around her neck, which police said caused noticeable injuries, including a visible ligature mark.

Rochefort faces charges of third-degree assault, third-degree strangulation, unlawful restraint and violation of a protective order.

He is being held on $2,500 cash bond and was scheduled to appear Wednesday in New London Superior Court.
