Mystic Middle School to be now known as Stonington Middle School
Stonington — The school board voted unanimously Thursday night to rename Mystic Middle School as Stonington Middle School.
The Middle School Steering Committee received numerous suggestions and whittled them down to the most popular three: Stonington Middle School, Mistuxet Avenue Middle School or Nathaniel Palmer Middle School.
In an online survey in which 1,463 parents and students voted, 77.7 percent favored Stonington Middle School, 17 percent Nathaniel Palmer and 5.3 percent Mistuxet.
The school board is renaming the school because it has voted to close Pawcatuck Middle School and send its students to the larger Mystic Middle School in the fall of 2019.
Among the middle school suggestions that didn't make the final three were Pawmystonian, Pleasant Park, Anchor, Ocean Community, Harbor Lights, Stonington Cubs, MMS 2.0, Walter Palmer, William Chesebrough and George McKenna.
