Stonington schools plan Parkland observances next week

Stonington — Stonington High School, Mystic Middle School and Pawcatuck Middle School staff and students all are planning observances next Wednesday to honor the 17 high school students and staff killed in Parkland, Fla., last month.

High School Principal Mark Friese told the school board Thursday night that students have been working with him to plan a voluntary event that morning called “Step out for Safety,” in which students will go out to the football field. The names of the 17 Florida victims will be read over the PA system and a bell will ring. The school also will launch a program called “Say Something,” in which students will be encouraged to tell someone if they feel another student may have a problem or is acting in away that could lead to violence. Students also are planning a march at the school on Saturday, March 24.

Pawcatuck Middle School is planning a 17-minute program at 10 a.m. and Mystic Middle School is planning one at the end of the day, which will involve the reading of the names of those who died.
