New London City Council inches closer to final budget vote

New London — The City Council on Monday opted not to take up a Finance Board recommendation to increase the proposed city budget.

The council instead, during the second of three votes on a budget, approved an unchanged $92.8 million spending proposal, a 3.16 percent increase in spending compared to the current budget.

If left unchanged, the budget would require a tax increase of about 0.41 mill, city Finance Director Don Gray said.

The proposal includes $49.86 million in general government spending, a 4.95 percent increase over the current budget, and $42.93 million in education spending, a 2.5 percent increase.

The Finance Board on May 15 voted to increase school spending by $600,000, a move school board members said helps to close a multimillion dollar shortfall in its own budget.

The City Council Finance Committee is scheduled to meet at 6 p.m. Thursday for continued budget deliberations. The council is expected to take up a final vote on the budget as early as Tuesday.
