Storm brings temporary power outages, water discoloration

A quick-moving storm brought torrential rains and damaging winds to the region Thursday morning, leaving thousands without power and disrupting train service.

East Lyme and Waterford were the hardest hit, with Eversource initially reporting 9,997 and 6,771 outages, respectively. Old Lyme saw 3,344 customers lose power, while Montville, Salem and New London reported close to 1,000.

By Thursday evening, Eversource's map showed no outages in any of these municipalities.

East Lyme officials said water service went down on Riverview Road between Society and Forest roads and also within Gorton Lake Shores. Water as far north as the Flanders Four Corners area was dirty as a result, officials said.

Officials said the water wasn't a health threat but could stain clothing. They advised against doing laundry and, for those who already did, said to rewash the laundry later with a rust stain remover or regular detergent but not chlorine.

Officials further said not to use hot water because it could force residents to have to flush their hot water tanks.

Officials expected the discoloration to be a temporary issue. Anyone with questions can call the Water Department at (860)691-4104.

Several Amtrak and Shore Line East trains also were running on delayed schedules because of the outages.
