Montville Parks and Rec activities heating up

While turnout for the Montville Carnival in June was strong, rain forced officials to postpone a firework show and concert featuring River of Dreams, the Billy Joel tribute band.

The Pennsylvania-based band will head to the Montville Community Center for a rescheduled concert at 7 p.m., Saturday, July 28. Fireworks by Central Maine Pyrotechnics will follow the free concert, sometime after 9 p.m.

Parks and Recreation Director Pete Bushway said the town has “a whole bunch of things going on the next couple of weeks,” noting “we’re pretty happy with the turnout we’re getting for our programs.”

Bushway said at least seven food vendors, including a few food trucks, would offer concessions for the concert and fireworks.

On Saturday, Aug. 4, the Beatles tribute band Mystery Tour will turn up at the Camp Oakdale Football Field in Faux Four costumes. The free concert is 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with food trucks and the Montville Youth Football League offering concessions.

Before the concert, the town will host its second annual cornhole tournament at 5 p.m. at Camp Oakdale. The entry fee is $20 per team of two.

At about 8:15 on Saturday, Aug. 11, Bushway said the town will feature a free outdoor family-friendly movie at the Camp Oakdale Football Field. The football concession stand will be open featuring popcorn, nachos and sodas to raise money for the youth football program.

The town is also planning its Family Fun Mud Run, set for Saturday, Aug. 25, at Camp Oakdale.

Last year, the mud run saw more than 170 people slip and slide through a half mile of mud.

“We were hoping for 50 and planning for 100,” Bushway said. “One-hundred-seventy-two came. Some of the kids did it multiple times.”

The event raises money for the Oakdale Fire Department, the Montville Youth Services Bureau and the Parks and Recreation Department. Entry is $10 for residents and $15 for non-residents who are 8 and younger; $20 for residents and $30 for residents who are 9 or older. Participants must be at least 4 years old.

There are at least five heats — with 40 participants per heat — planned to begin at 10:30 a.m.

Anyone interested in registering in the cornhole tournament or mud run should call (860) 848-6780. People can register at the events in person if available slots remain.
