New London councilors agree on makeup of new waste management committee

New London — The City Council by next month is expected to vote on the formation of a seven-member Solid Waste Management Task Force.

The committee would explore ways to increase recycling, reduce solid waste disposal fees, garner community support and look at options outside of the pay-as-you-throw program still under consideration by the city.

Members of the City Council Finance and Public Works committees hashed out details during a joint meeting on Monday, agreeing that the new task force would include two councilors, a member of the Neighborhood Alliance, a member of the City Center District and three members of the public, including a high school student.

Councilor Don Venditto said the council would vote to approve the public members of the committee based on their interest.
