    Pawcatuck fire chief: Two escape burning car with minor injuries

    Stonington — A car smashed into a pole on Liberty Street in Pawcatuck Saturday evening, then burst into flames while the driver and passenger were trapped inside, a fire official said.

    The pair were able to escape the 2016 Audi with minor injuries, Pawcatuck fire Chief Kevin Burns said. The vinyl siding of a home near the pole ignited but was extinguished, he said.

    The crash occurred in the area of 384 Liberty St. at 9:53 p.m. Firefighters and Stonington police assisted Seaport Auto of Mystic in removing the debris from the scene.
