Friends and Neighbors: Fitch High robotics adviser wins local community service award

Martin Cloudas has received the 2018 Jacqueline B. Nixon Community Service Award from Groton Utilities, marking his dedication to the community and Fitch High School.

The award is given annually in memory of Nixon, who operated a food pantry out of her house for 24 years before her death in 2004.

Cloudas has served as mentor, supporter, teacher and adviser to the Aluminum Falcons, the high school’s robotics team. He was recognized for his leadership as the robotics club’s booster organization, which improved fundraising efforts to allow the team to compete at higher level competitions.

In the nominating application, the team noted Cloudas was like a dad to the members.

“His ability to communicate with students has produced a trust with students, inspiring them to fulfill themselves and become better people,” members said in the application.

At the annual City of Groton Celebration Aug. 3, Groton Utilities presented a $1,000 check to the Aluminum Falcons in honor of Cloudas’ work.
