Library Bookmobile on national tour to make stop Tuesday in Norwich

Norwich — Otis Library will have a temporary branch at the Howard T. Brown Memorial Park at Norwich Harbor on Tuesday.

    Make that an e-branch.

Otis will be the only Connecticut library in the Libraries Online Inc. (LION) system to host the online materials vendor Overdrive’s Digital Bookmobile, which is making a national tour to spread awareness that the library has hundreds of digitized books and audio books available for patrons to download.

The Bookmobile, which is handicapped accessible with a chairlift and wide aisles, will park at Brown Park on Chelsea Harbor Drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The 42-foot Toterhome RV is equipped with a “gadget gallery” filled with popular electronic devices, including iPhones, iPads, Android phones and tablets, Chromebooks and Kindle devices, for patrons to browse Otis’ digital collection and experiment with downloading materials.

Patrons are invited to bring their own devices for assistance in downloading Overdrive’s newest reading app, Libby. The new app requires Android 4.4 operating system, Apple OS 9 or better and Windows 10 for computers, said Joe Skelley, marketing and events specialist for Overdrive, which is based in Cleveland.

“If you have a device, bring it with you,” Skelley said. “Or if you just want to see the truck, we have take-home guides we can give you.”

Overdrive’s Bookmobile has been touring the country for the past 10 years, and the latest tour will promote the new app, Libby, Skelley said, which was released a year ago.

Skelley said as more older people become comfortable with computers and mobile devices, they also realize that all books can be read as “large print” through e-book downloads.

The app allows library patrons to keep the materials for a duration set by each member library. Otis patrons can check out up to 10 digital items at a time, and each one will remain on the device for 14 days and then will be deleted automatically.

“We’re not in competition with the physical library, we’re a secondary branch," Skelley said. “We’re open 24/7, 365.”

Otis Library Executive Director Robert Farwell said he has wanted to get the Bookmobile to visit Norwich, and when the new tour was announced, he signed up. Otis will have two staff members aboard to assist library patrons. Overdrive also will have two specialists on board, along with driver Ira Newman, who lives in the front of the Bookmobile.

“If you’re a member of the library with a current card, you can use your barcode and download materials from the Otis website onto just about any device, computer, iPhone, Android,” Farwell said.

Farwell said Otis circulated 489 audio books and 689 e-books in July using Overdrive’s app. The library has a different vendor, RB Digital, that provides electronic versions of magazines and periodicals available for download.

Skelley said Tuesday’s event will have activities for young readers, including read-along narrated books with print on screen, crafts and giveaways throughout the day.

“We just want people to come in and see what it does,” Skelley said.

After Tuesday, the Bookmobile will stop in Cumberland and Middletown, R.I., before heading to Massachusetts and New York.
