Professor to give talk at Lyme Library on First Amendment

Lyme — Professor Emeritus John E. Finn from Wesleyan University is scheduled to deliver a talk, "Speech Freaks: First Amendment Fundamentals and Common Misperceptions," at the Lyme Public Library at 2 p.m. Saturday.

According to an event notice, Finn, who is the author of several books on constitutional law, "will elaborate on the kind of limits that can be placed on speech, why objectionable speech must be protected, the relationship of the First Amendment to other constitutional liberties and principles, and why 'it is every citizen’s civic responsibility to be literate about the Constitution — to know not only what it says and means but also to know why it means what it does, to know where it is clear, where it is vague, and where it asks us to make up our own minds.'"

The Friends of the Lyme Public Library are sponsoring the event, which is free and open to the public. The library can be reached at (860) 434-2272 or programreg@lymepl.org.

Comment threads are monitored for 48 hours after publication and then closed.
