Special education teacher Erika Piver was recently named LEARN’s Teacher of the Year. Piver, who lives in Stonington, is a longtime employee of the regional education service center that serves southeastern Connecticut. She was recognized first as the top honoree in the student support services department, and she will represent LEARN at the state level.

In a release, Student Support Services Director Bridgette Gordon-Hickey said Piver is a model teacher who fosters an inclusive learning environment and encourages self advocacy in her students.

LEARN’s magnet schools also nominated teachers of the year. The Friendship School in Waterford named pre-K teacher Diane Felty. The Regional Multicultural Magnet School in New London named fourth- and fifth-grade teacher Kristin Gemaly. The Dual Language and Arts Magnet Middle School in New London named sixth-grade teacher Britney Lisee. The Marine Science Magnet High School in Groton named school counselor Anna Scott.
