Backus reverified as Level III trauma center

Norwich — The American College of Surgeons has reverified the William W. Backus Hospital as a Level III trauma center, which means it can “provide prompt assessment, resuscitation, surgery, intensive care and stabilization” to injured patients.

The American College of Surgeons lists five levels on its website, with Level I being the most comprehensive and Level V the least.

In a news release, Director of Trauma Dr. David Coletti said the three-year reverification reflects well on the whole hospital.

“If you are prepared for trauma, your operating room is more prepared for complex surgery, and your critical care unit is prepared for challenging trauma patients,” Coletti said.

The verification process includes a two-day, on-site review of trauma cases, processes and staff education to ensure the center meets the standards for trauma care. Backus has the only designated trauma center in eastern Connecticut.
