Waterford police arrest fugitive from Texas

Waterford — An escaped prisoner from Texas who was residing in Waterford was arrested Tuesday by town police.

Jason Edward Jones, 36, of Austin, Texas, was charged Tuesday as a fugitive from justice after the Travis County Sheriff’s Office of Texas issued an active arrest warrant for a charge of first-degree escape from custody.

On Tuesday, Waterford Police Department Investigative Services and Patrol Division surveilled where Jones was believed to be living at 19 Deerfield Road in Waterford. Jones then was apprehended and brought into custody. He was held on a $250,000 bond and was due Wednesday in New London Superior Court.

According to a news report by CBS Austin on April 18, Jones was being held in the Travis County Jail for a motion to revoke his probation on an assault charge. While there, Jones smuggled a weapon into the jail. After using that weapon against officers, Jones was transferred to the Austin State Hospital for a mental evaluation, before becoming violent with officers again. He escaped the hospital in April, CBS Austin reported.

According to that report, Jones has a criminal history dating back to 2012, with five arrests and three convictions. Of those arrests and convictions, Jones had been charged with assault and burglary among other charges, according to Deputy U.S. Marshal Brandon Filla, who spoke with CBS Austin. Filla did not specify the degree of the charges.

The Day was not able to reach the Travis County Jail or Police Department by phone Wednesday night. According to an automated warrant inquiry, Jones was charged April 6 with third-degree possession of a weapon in a penal institution and on April 27 with third-degree assault.
