Regulators approve contracts with wind farm, other renewable energy producers

New Britain — The Public Utilities Regulatory Authority on Wednesday night announced it approved long-term contracts with five renewable energy producers, including Ørsted US Offshore Wind, the pairing of Denmark-based Orsted and Block Island Wind Farm developer Deepwater Wind.

In addition to Orsted US Offshore Wind's 200-megawatt Revolution Wind project — planned for federal waters off Martha's Vineyard — PURA approved contracts with four fuel cell facilities. The projects will deliver a combined 252 megawatts of clean electricity.

PURA did not disclose pricing for the five 20-year contracts. A message left with PURA was not immediately returned. PURA said rates for the offshore wind project will be "slightly above" market prices. PURA expects the fuel cell projects' rates to be "moderately above" market prices.

PURA said Revolution Wind will reduce at least 6 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions from the power sector. Orsted US Offshore Wind says the wind farm will generate more than 1,000 direct and indirect jobs.

Installation work on Revolution Wind will begin in 2022. The 75-turbine wind farm should be operational by 2023. Offshore survey work started earlier this year.

Orsted has committed to keeping Deepwater Wind's pledge to invest at least $15 million in New London State Pier.
