Police working to solve spotty radio coverage in new Stonington schools

Stonington — Police are working to correct a problem in which they have trouble communicating with their radios within certain sections of the newly renovated Deans Mill and West Vine Street schools.

Capt. Todd Olson explained that the new building materials block a clear signal in some sections of the structures, a problem that police and the K-12 School Building Committee had expected might happen.

“It does work but its spotty and not as good as we’d like it to be,” Olson said.

He said police are working with their radio consultant, as well as the state, to come up with a cost-effective solution.

The town joined the state radio system this year to improve coverage, enhance communications with state agencies and save money while it was replacing the department’s aging radio system.

Olson said police have come up with two separate plans to address the problem at each school and recently updated the Board of Police Commissioners on the issue.

“It is something that can be fixed. It’s a matter of coming up with a solution that works and we can get for a reasonable amount of money,” he said.
