Test shows New London beach with high bacterial levels

New London — The Ledge Light Health District announced Thursday that bathing water sampling it conducted on Monday showed that L&M Beach on Pequot Avenue had elevated bacterial levels.

The area was posted with an advisory, and swimming or wading in the waters is discouraged until further notice.

The health district added that “rain or other contaminating events occurring before the Monday and Wednesday morning sampling can lead to elevated bacterial counts, especially in bathing areas with storm water runoff (storm drain pipes and/or extensive impervious surfaces) or low water turnover (inland bathing areas). We recommend those individuals responsible for the bathing areas take these events into consideration.”
