Groton — Groton Public Schools Transition Academy students have opened a new summertime hot dog stand, called "Hot Dogs and Nibbles," at Poquonnock Plains Park, the school district announced in a news release.

The students are staffing the stand and sponsoring the venture in partnership with Elisa Coppelman of Noank Nibbles, an artisan herb and spice company, the release states. The stand is open 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday from July 10 to Aug. 8 at Poquonnock Plains Park, 150 Fort Hill Road in Groton.

Students ages 18 to 21 who are working on their secondary transition and independent living skills attend Groton Public Schools Transition Academy, the release states. The students explore job interests with employers in the community and receive on-the-job training.

"This is one of the summer job sites our students will be assigned to on a weekly basis and is a great opportunity for them to gain real world job experience and interact with the community," Denise Doolittle, district director of pupil personnel, said in a statement.

Elisa Coppelman founded Noank Nibbles and has had a longtime partnership with Transition Academy students, who have helped package herb and spice dip mixes and also staffed a Farmer’s Market stand, according to the release. In addition to job opportunities, she also provides each student with a $50 cash scholarship when they turn 21 and graduate.

Hot dogs, chips and water will be offered, with prices ranging from $3.50 for a hot dog to $8 for a combo meal, according to the menu. Traditional and specialty ‘Noank Nibbles’-infused condiments will be available.
