Raccoon tests positive for rabies in Old Lyme

Old Lyme — Ledge Light Health District says a raccoon tested positive for rabies in the area of Long Acre Lane on Tuesday.

Health district officials on Friday urged the public to refrain from approaching wild or stray animals.

Rabies can infect all warm-blooded animals, including people. The deadly disease is mostly spread by wild animals, but stray dogs and cats also can become infected. The virus spreads by scratches from infected animals or when infected saliva comes into contact with open wounds or eyes, nose or mouth.

Anyone with concerns or questions can contact Ledge Light Health District at (860) 448-4882, ext. 1307, or the animal control officer at (860) 434-1605, ext. 224.
