Norwich Rotary Celebrate Diversity event to start at 5 p.m. Monday

Norwich — The Norwich Rotary Celebrate Diversity event will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, a reversal of an announcement Thursday that the event would be moved up in response to concerns about the mosquito-borne eastern equine encephalitis virus.

The event committee announced the change Friday and said in a news release that bug sprays and wipes, both DEET and non-DEET options, will be provided free of charge.

Attendees are encouraged to take protective measures. Wear shoes, socks, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt when outdoors for long periods of time, or when mosquitoes are most active, between dusk and dawn. Clothing should be light-colored and made of tightly woven materials that keep mosquitoes away from the skin.

The event features ethnic foods, highlighting area restaurants, music and dancing from countries around the world and the presentation of the annual Lottie B. Scott Diversity Award to an individual and the Community Diversity Award to an organization.

The event is free to attend, though food tickets are $10 for an individual, $30 for a family of up to five.

This year, Otis Library has been selected as the recipient for the Norwich Rotary Community Diversity Award, created in 2016 to honor an organization that has had a significant effect on diversity in the Norwich area.

The Lottie B. Scott Award, established in 2013 at the first Celebrate Diversity event, recognizes the achievements of an individual who has enhanced the community. This year’s recipient, Zechariah Stover, is president of the Rotary Community Corps. He also is a leader with the Spirit of Greeneville Day, the Ellis Walter Ruley Project Committee, Sankofa educational group, Norwich Juneteenth Day, the Empty Bowl Project, Norwich Polish Festival, Bully Busters, the Rose Arts Festival, Norwich History Day and other organizations and events.

The award presentations are scheduled to take place at 6:45 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased at the event, or online at bit.ly/NRdiversity. For more information, contact Mike Cooney at (860) 373-0097 or Suki Lagrito at (860) 304-8505.
