Downtown Norwich to host international food festival Sunday

Norwich — The fall nip in the air hasn’t slowed Global City Norwich’s effort to bring more and more people downtown to showcase local restaurants and new shops that recently opened.

The multicultural promotional organization is sponsoring an international food festival from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the corner of Franklin and Bath streets. Admission is free for the entertainment and browsing, with food for sale from restaurant booths and food trucks.

Food to be offered at the festival include Hungarian, Cuban, Spanish, Cape Verdean, American South, Asian and “all-American favorites,” said Suki Lagrito, Global City Norwich liaison.

Live music will be provided by the Norwich Klezmer band Klezmenschen from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. and the Cape Verdean jazz band the Kabu Jazz Trio from 5 to 6 p.m.

Lagrito said the Massachusetts trio played at the Norwich Cape Verdean festival earlier this summer and were so well received, they were asked to come back.

“It’s a nice event to come and enjoy downtown, and we’re really encouraging people to walk around downtown,” Lagrito said.

Three new shops have opened in the Sunshine building on Franklin Street in the block where the festival will be held: a bicycle shop, a denim clothing store and most recently a shop selling “uncommon goods,” Lagrito said. The new A&S Asian Market also recently opened across Bath Street from the festival ground.
