Ledyard teen named Dance Extension performer of the year
Megan Banach of Ledyard has been named the 2020 Dancer of the Year by the faculty of The Dance Extension. She has been studying with the school, based in New London and Waterford, for 13 years and currently takes classes in ballet, tap, modern dance, jazz and hip hop.
Banach, a junior at Ledyard High School, has performed with the Community Dance Ensemble for seven seasons, giving free shows at nursing homes, senior centers and other facilities throughout New England. She has also attended master classes in New York City.
Community meals center names volunteer of the month
Jack Schmidt has been named the New London Community Meals Center's January volunteer of the month. He has been volunteering at the meal center since his retirement from Electric Boat in 2010.
Schmidt picks up donations at Panera Bread and assists the kitchen manager, Peta, with the weekly "shopping" at the Gemma Moran Food Bank. He is also a volunteer with the Connecticut Humane Society and the Town of Ledyard Cemetery Committee.
