Virus forces Stonington Farmers' Market to move outside

Stonington — The popular Stonington Farmers’ Market is going outside.

The Stonington Village Improvement Association announced Thursday that the winter market, which is held indoors at the American Velvet Mill, will now operate outside in the mill’s parking on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The SVIA said most of the market’s full-time, permanent farm vendors will be there and many of them are taking pre-orders. Market updates and direct farmer contact information is available at sviastonington.org.

Last Saturday., when the market was closed, a handful of vendors set up shop in the parking lot. During the warm weather months, the market is held at the Town Dock.

The market also has established a list of safety guidelines. These include buying items and leaving, not touching or picking through produce and products and keeping 6 feet from other people. There also will be no music, activities, sampling of food or food sold for consumption at the market.

The market’s announcement said all plans are subject to change with official recommendations about the coronavirus.

“We monitor recommendations from the CT Department of Health (CTDPH), the RI Department of Health (RIDOH), Ledge Light Health District (LLHD), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and will make timely decisions to support the health of our vendors and customers,” the SVIA stated.
