Ledyard Finance Committee sends $60.2 million budget to Town Council

Ledyard — The town Finance Committee voted in a virtual meeting Wednesday to send a $60.2 million budget for the 2020-21 fiscal year to the Town Council, which will meet next week to discuss it.

The motion passed 2-0, with Councilors Andra Ingalls and Bill Saums in support. Councilor Tom Malone was absent.

The budget consists of a $27,044,308 general government budget and a $33,189,420 Board of Education budget. The projected tax rate would be 35.06 mills, the same as in the current fiscal year.

The town will host a virtual public hearing at 7 p.m. Monday, June 1, for residents to provide public comment on the budget. Presentations will be given on both parts of the budget, and a copy of the budget and meeting access information will be available at ledyardct.org. An executive order from Gov. Ned Lamont allows towns to pass their budgets this year without a town meeting or referendum vote due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The budget presented at the beginning of the meeting was about $45,000 higher, which would have represented a tax rate increase of 0.04 mill. During the meeting, members were able to eliminate the overage from electricity and heating budget lines as well as updated fuel costs from the Public Works Department that reflected current prices.
