Norwich — City basketball courts and the skateboard park will reopen Wednesday, and Spaulding Pond Beach will open for swimming Thursday, the city Recreation Department announced Tuesday.

Families going to Spaulding Pond Beach will be required to keep 15 feet apart by adhering to markings on the beach. Lifeguards have been specially trained in rescue techniques and on administering first aid in ways that protect the public from the spread of viruses.

The pond will be closed Wednesdays and will have the following new hours: Mondays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesdays and Fridays, Noon to 6 p.m.

Several other city Recreation Department programs and facilities will reopen June 29, and basketball leagues may begin play July 6.

Summer recreation camp programs will adhere to all guidelines proposed by the Office of Early Childhood to protect children and staff from COVID-19. Some protections include daily temperature checks for all children, small group sizes and socially distanced activities. Staff members have been training weekly to ensure compliance with these protocols.

The Community Foundation of Southeastern CT has provided the department with $25,000 for camp scholarships in recognition of the financial difficulties some families may be facing.

Norwich Summer camp consists of seven one-week sessions beginning June 29, divided into three age groups. Summer camp is designed to give children the opportunity to participate in fun sports, arts and crafts, science and technology and health and nutrition programs throughout the day. Families can register online at norwichct.org/287/Recreation.

Phase 2 of Connecticut’s reopening plan allows for noncontact sports to resume play. Play will be permitted on fields and basketball courts. To request a reservation contact the Recreation Department at (860) 823-3791 or go to norwichct.org/296/Facilities to complete the request form.
