Mashantuckets keeping museum closed until next spring

Mashantucket — The Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center, closed amid the coronavirus pandemic, will not reopen until next spring, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe confirmed Friday.

The museum was eligible to open this week in phase two of Gov. Ned Lamont’s statewide reopening of nonessential businesses.

Joe Baker, the museum’s executive director, informed staff in an email that the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Council had decided not to reopen the museum until the spring of 2021, “with the exception of any events that have been booked for this year.”

"In any case, we regret that we will not be among those museums who will be re-opening this year,” Baker wrote.

Asked for comment, the tribe issued a statement: “We are focused primarily on the reopening and stabilization of Foxwoods before we reopen the museum,” said Lori Potter, the tribe’s director of public affairs.

Foxwoods Resort Casino, the tribe’s main source of revenue, partially reopened June 1 and has since expanded the reopening.

Potter said some museum staff will continue to work on museum programming while the museum is closed.
