Groton school district reports positive COVID-19 case at Claude Chester School

Groton — The school district learned Tuesday that a member of the Claude Chester Elementary School community has tested positive for COVID-19, Superintendent Michael Graner said.

“We collaborated with Ledge Light Health District to determine and notify all recent close contacts with this person,” Graner said in a notice Tuesday to staff and parents. “The notification process was completed this afternoon. The affected person has been instructed to isolate at home following public health guidelines.”

Graner said by phone that the school district, in conjunction with Ledge Light, was able to complete contact tracing and the school will reopen on Thursday.

The school district is following the hybrid model, in which one cohort of students goes to school in person Mondays and Tuesdays, while the second cohort learns remotely. All students learn remotely on Wednesdays, when the schools are cleaned. The second cohort attends school in person on Thursdays and Fridays, while the first cohort learns remotely.

Claude Chester had shifted to full remote learning for this Monday and Tuesday due to a case at Groton Middle School in which the individual had limited contact with members of the Claude Chester community.

Graner said that every time the school district has a positive case, “it’s becoming more and more apparent that clearly the virus is spreading, and we’re just trying to be vigilant and keep on top of it.”

“We are getting good support with testing in our community, which is really the key,” he added. He also said contact tracing is being done as quickly as possible.
