Norwich mayor endorses Weir in 19th District race

Republican Mayor Peter Nystrom of Norwich has endorsed the GOP's candidate for state Senate in the 19th District, Steve Weir of Hebron.

“Steve will be a state senator who supports the safety of our community, including our law enforcement officers and their families,” Nystrom said in a news release. “Steve and I have both been vocal opponents of the flawed police bill, HB 6004, that was rushed with no public input. I know Steve will fight for the changes that are needed, as well as supporting our businesses and working families in Norwich.”

Nystrom, mayor since 2017, previously served on the Norwich City Council and as a state representative in the 46th District.

“I look forward to joining Mayor Nystrom to serve the people of Norwich, and I aspire to do so with the same passion and commitment that he has demonstrated over his impressive career as a public servant,” Weir said in a release.

Weir is a former Glastonbury police officer who now owns a Glastonbury business that specializes in disaster cleanup. He has lived in Hebron with his wife and three children for about two decades.

The 19th District encompasses Columbia, Franklin, Hebron, Lebanon, Ledyard, Lisbon, Marlborough, Sprague and part of Montville.
