New COVID cases force three Groton schools to shift to distance learning for two weeks

Groton — The Groton school district reported five positive COVID-19 cases on Monday, prompting school officials to close three schools — Fitch High School, Northeast Academy Arts Magnet School and S.B. Butler Elementary School — for about the next two weeks, the superintendent said.

Students at those schools will be in full remote learning for that period.

The district learned Monday of a case among the Fitch High School community, a case among the Northeast Academy community, and two cases among the S.B Butler community. The district shifted to distance learning for those schools to allow the district and Ledge Light Health District to complete contact tracing, Superintendent Michael Graner said. The individuals had significant contacts with other people.

A case also was reported Monday among a member of the Catherine Kolnaski STEAM Magnet School community, but no changes were announced for that school. Graner said that the individual had limited contacts, who have been notified, and the person has been instructed to isolate at home.

Fitch will remain on full distance learning through Nov. 13, and in-person classes will start again on Nov. 16, according to a notification. All in-person extracurricular and athletic activities will be canceled during this period.

S.B. Butler will switch to full distance learning until Nov. 12, with in-person classes starting again on Nov. 13, according to the notification.

Northeast Academy will be full distance learning until Nov. 11, with in-person classes starting on Nov. 12, according to the notification.

The Tree House program at both Northeast Academy and S.B. Butler will be closed while the schools are on distance learning.

Graner said school officials are aware that Groton is under a “red” alert and are closely monitoring the situation with Ledge Light, but the school district remains in hybrid learning format.
