East Lyme High School reports new case of COVID-19

East Lyme — On Wednesday, one day after town schools reported three new cases of COVID-19, Superintendent Jeffrey Newton reported another person who tested positive at the high school.

“In working with the health professionals at Ledge Light Health District, we have found this case (in addition to the case from yesterday) to be isolated and the East Lyme High School building will be open tomorrow for students and staff,” Newton wrote in an email to East Lyme Public Schools staff, parents and guardians. The last day this student was in school was Friday.

School officials reported Tuesday that three members of the school district community — who were from East Lyme High School, East Lyme Middle School and Lillie B. Haynes School — tested positive for COVID-19.

The three individuals, as well as the fourth person reported Wednesday, were told to isolate at home. The district is collaborating with the health district to notify close contacts, Newton said. He said the individuals from the high school and middle school were last at school on Nov. 6, and the individual from Lillie B. Haynes was last at school on Oct. 29.

He urged staff, parents and guardians to talk to their children and family members about preventive measures, such as frequent hand washing, wearing a mask, social distancing and avoiding touching their eyes, mouth and nose.

On Tuesday, he also announced that the school district will continue its hybrid learning model through the end of December as COVID-19 cases rise in the region and state.
