East Lyme Town Hall, public buildings to close to the public effective Thursday

East Lyme — Public buildings, including Town Hall and the library, will close to the public effective Thursday, according to a town announcement.

In a video announcement and message, First Selectman Mark Nickerson said the closure is an effort to keep town employees and the public safe.

"The messages about the pandemic and the numbers are startling and concerning,” he said, adding that recent projections he has listened to suggest that this is not the peak, which will not be here until another three to six weeks from now.

With that in mind, town officials wanted to keep the workspace safe and will close Town Hall to the general public. It will still be staffed, so residents can call or email, or make an appointment if it’s essential work.

It’s important to keep workers safe, Nickerson said. “We’ve had some recent outbreaks among our staff, among our crews some recent exposures and that does concern me,” he said.

He said he hopes the message inspires people to redouble their efforts to keep safe and to be vigilant, including to not be around anyone without a mask, keep 6 feet away from others and limit exposure.

He said at Town Hall, workspaces are separated by more than 6 feet, and people in private offices are asked to close their doors. He encouraged residents to work from home if they can.

According to a Facebook post, the East Lyme Public Library will be closed to the public, effective Thursday, but will offer curbside pickup.
