COVID-19 vaccine appointments available Thursday in Groton for those eligible

UPDATE: All appointments filled up on Thursday morning.

Ledge Light Health District is holding a vaccine clinic at the City of Groton Municipal Building, 295 Meridian St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, and appointments are available for those eligible to be vaccinated.

The people currently eligible are those age 75 and older, health care personnel, medical first responders and long-term care facility residents who live or work in Connecticut.

As of 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Ledge Light Director Steve Mansfield said there were more than 150 open appointments.

People can register at hipaa.jotform.com/Neil_nhoward/Feb4Reg. Ledge Light went live Wednesday with its own registration system, an alternative to the Vaccine Administration Management System, or VAMS. The idea was to implement a more user-friendly system, and Ledge Light's system is available in English and Spanish.

Advance registration is required, and Mansfield said people can register up until clinic time, or when the clinic fills up.

He said those who don't have access to a computer can call him at (860) 867-7962. He said if someone has an appointment scheduled further out but would rather get vaccinated Thursday, they can register for the clinic Thursday and cancel their future appointment.

Ledge Light is using the Moderna vaccine, which requires two doses about 28 days apart. Mansfield said the health district will be reaching out directly to everyone who receives their first dose Thursday to schedule their second dose.

For next week, Mansfield said Ledge Light is in the planning process of scheduling a vaccine clinic in New London on Wednesday and in North Stonington on Friday, as these are the towns in Ledge Light's jurisdiction with the lowest vaccination rates so far. These will be in lieu of a clinic in Groton next week.
