Food box distribution to be held Thursday in Groton

Groton — The school system's Food Services Department in partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture announced a distribution of 1,300 free Farm To Community meal boxes between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Thursday at Washington Park at 283 Meridian St. in the city.

Each box contains two types of meat, dairy items, fruit, vegetables and dry goods. One box is available per household.

The event is open to all in the community, not just students, and will be held as a drive-through event, with three drive-through lanes in Washington Park. Masks will be required.

Ernie Koschmieder, the school system's food service director, said there is such a need in the community, especially during the pandemic.

“Groton has a need, just like everywhere else,” he said.

The Board of Education also is making arrangements to bring the boxes to some of the senior citizen complexes throughout the city and town.
