Callahan to seek fifth term as Stonington Borough warden

Stonington — Borough Warden Jeff Callahan said this week that he plans to run for a fifth and final term in the May 3 borough election.

Callahan, an unaffiliated voter who has run unopposed in his previous four elections, currently is in his eighth year of running the borough. No one has announced their intention to challenge him.

During his time in office, borough residents have faced little to no tax increases, including no tax rate hike in the proposed 2021-22 budget. Callahan also led the two-year effort that concluded in May 2019 of residents approving a package of charter revisions designed to make borough government more sustainable and address the shortage of residents willing to serve in elected and appointed positions.

"I figured an even 10 years would be a good time to wrap it up," Callahan said about his tenure as warden.

As for why he is seeking one more term, he said there are several projects he would like to get done, such as possibly creating public restrooms in the borough and continuing steet repairs.

"And no one is anxious or ready to do it," he said about the warden's job.
