Late Mystic resident's art on display at Hygienic

photo submitted“Daddy’s Girls” by Susan Hurley

During Susan Hurley’s too-short life — she died in 2016 of brain cancer at age 58 — the much-loved Mystic and East Lyme resident was an artist, writer, award-winning photographer, chef, events planner, music promoter, television producer, sailor, interior decorator, graphic and costume designer, animal-rescue advocate, and more.

Her life is celebrated in “The Art of Susan Hurley,” a new exhibition in New London’s Hygienic Galleries. Works in the show reflect Hurley’s artistic eye through a variety of photographs and other mediums.

Her widower, Kam Ghaffari of East Lyme, described Hurley thus: “She was such a uniquely original artist — painting, pastels, photography, wild stuff with toys, funky jewelry, and so much more — all bursting with the joy and beauty of life, expressed through her eccentric spirit. Wild and free and unfettered by convention, like herself.”

The show runs through May 22. Admission is free. Hygienic Art, at 69-73 Bank St. New London, is open noon-7 p.m. Thurs. and Fri., 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Sat. Call (860) 443-8001 or visit www.hygienic.org.
