Kindness in Real Life: Cemetery cleanup group wins award

Michael Carroll, leader of the nonprofit group Rediscovering History that has helped clean up cemeteries in Salem, Lisbon, North Stonington and elsewhere in the area, has won a state Preservation Award for “working tirelessly and effectively, with a team of dedicated volunteers, to address an area of historic preservation that is often overlooked: our state’s rapidly deteriorating historic cemeteries,” as his nomination stated.

Carroll and a variety of volunteers has cleaned up, restored and rehabilitated dozens of historic burial sites in the state since the organization’s founding last year.

This month, the group visited Lathrop Cemetery and Way Cemetery in Salem as well as Read-Haskell/Herskell Cemetery in Lisbon.

Other cleanups upcoming locally include Dewolf Farm Cemetery #1 in Salem on May 23; Miner Cemetery on June 5; Randall-Brown Cemetery in North Stonington on June 12; Paugwonk Baptist Cemetery Salem on June 13; Fox Cemetery in Salem on June 19; Rathbone Cemetery in Salem on July 10; and, pending approval, Killam Cemetery in Preston on July 25.

For information, check out the Rediscovering History page on Facebook or call Carroll at (860) 449-3521.
