Lamont to continue requiring masks in schools

Gov. Ned Lamont has announced that students in kindergarten through 12th grade will be wearing masks for at least the first month of the school year.

During news conferences Tuesday in New Britain and New Haven, he said schools would begin the year under last year’s executive order requiring masks in school. He said this does not mean there will again be a statewide mask mandate. It was the first time he’d publicly discussed his intention to keep masks on in schools, an issue that has been controversial in some communities.

“I just got the numbers again for today, the infection rate continues to go up despite the fact that we have 80% of our adults vaccinated. We’re up at 4.2%, 3.4% for the week,” Lamont said in New Britain, noting it was a hard decision but he wants students back in classrooms safely.

His executive powers end on Sept. 30, unless the legislature convenes and extends them.
