    Groton to open shelter at Fitch High School ahead of Hurricane Henri

    Groton — The town is opening the shelter at Fitch High School, 101 Groton Long Point Road, at 6 p.m. Saturday ahead of Hurricane Henri's projected arrival.

    Groton Town Emergency Management and Police Departments announced in a news release that COVID-19 precautions will be in place and people are required to wear a mask at the shelter. Prior to entering, people will be screened with COVID-19 related questions and a temperature check.

    According to the release, people going to the shelter should consider bringing blankets, pillows, toiletries, medicine, clothing, cellphones, chargers, headphones, portable electronics and anything needed for a special diet.

    Pets are allowed at the shelter, and animal control officers will be available.

    The town departments said in the release that they encourage residents areas that are low-lying or prone to flooding to seek shelter with friends or relatives in safer areas or shelters.

    They are urging people to prepare for the storm.

    They are encouraging people to stock up on supplies. Recommendations include: one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days for drinking and sanitation; at least three days of nonperishable food; battery-powered or hand-crank radio and a NOAA weather radio with tone alert and extra batteries; flashlight and extra batteries; first aid kit; a whistle; garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation; wrench or pliers to turn off utilities; a manual can opener; maps; cellphone with chargers, inverter or solar charger; food and litter for pets; medicine or special need items; diapers for babies; cleaning supplies and face masks.

    People also should clear their yard, cover windows and doors, and check the batteries in carbon monoxide detectors.

    Sand and bags are available between the Public Works Highway Garage and Town Hall Annex.

    If people have an emergency, they should call 911.
