Florence Griswold Museum readies for Wee Faerie Village

She has been participating in the show for about five years and said it's well worth the three-hour drive. "There's not too many places that appreciate a fairy garden," she said of why she joins. Old Lyme — Artists were getting their pieces ready Wednesday for the Florence Griswold Museum's annual Wee Faerie Village exhibit.

This is the ninth year Madeline Kwasniewski of Niantic has participated in the show. She and partner T. Arthur Donnelly were working on installing branches and placing birds in their piece "Avery's Surreal Aviary" on Wednesday.

One of Kwasniewski's favorite things is to come during the weekends and watch visitors' reactions to the pieces. "This is for the little girl in me," she said of why she always participates.

The show, themed "Folly Woods," is open Oct. 1-31 and features over 20 faerie homes on the museum grounds. Its theme is a play on ornamental buildings popular on country estates, parks and gardens in the 18th and 19th centuries. Jess Zeedyk of Cromwell was working on attaching moss to her piece "Flora's Artistic Atrium" on Wednesday. She said she first visited the event with her daughter about 10 years ago and after that, knew she had to participate.

"I've always made little fairy houses," she said, "coming here felt like coming home."
