Montville— The Board of Education held a 30-minute closed door session Tuesday night to discuss a "confidential student matter."

The board took no action after leaving the executive session.

It is unknown if the session is related to the allegations involving teacher and head football coach Tanner Grove who was placed on paid leave last week as police and the state Department of Children and Families investigate him for alleged misconduct with a 14-year-old girl.

Meanwhile, high school students are scheduled to be dismissed at 11:10 a.m. Wednesday so teachers and staff can meet in response to events. 

"Based on our strong commitment to ensuring the social and emotional well-being of our school community, staff will use the afternoon to collaborate and share strategies to support the high school community as we move forward from recent events," wrote Superintendent Laurie Pallin' in an email to families and staff.

After Tuesday's executive session, Pallin would not comment Tuesday night about when she became aware of the allegations against Grove and if she, high school Principal Heather Sangermano or Assistant Principal Robert Alves had reported the girl's Sept. 29 complaint about Grove to police or DCF.

Mandated reporters, such as teachers, principals and school psychologists are required by state law to orally report suspected abuse to law enforcement or DCF within 12 hours of receiving a report, and to follow up with a written report within 48 hours. Failure to do so within the timeframe is subject to criminal penalties.

The girl's mother said the incident involving her daughter and Grover occurred Sept. 27 and on Sept. 29 her daughter reported  it school psychologist Lillian Porter at 7:30 a.m. before her class with Grove. She said her daughter also spoke with Sangermano and Alves that morning. The mother said she filed a report with Montville Police after school on Sept. 30. A DCF spokesman said his agency received a report on Sept. 30 at 4:38 p.m. He would not say who filed the report.
