Norwich City Council recount to be held Monday

Norwich — It won’t be until next week when newly reelected Republican Mayor Peter Nystrom learns who will be sitting on the 2021-23 City Council and whether his party will gain the council majority to control city policy and spending.

Nystrom easily won his third term as mayor Tuesday night, besting current Democratic Council President Pro Tempore Mark Bettencourt. But the race for the six-member City Council will undergo a recount starting at 9 a.m. Monday, city Registrars of Voters Republican Cheryl Stover and Democrat Dianne Daniels said.

According to unofficial results released late Tuesday, Republican incumbent Alderwoman Stacy Gould was top vote-getter with 2,701 votes, with council newcomer and current Democratic school board member Swarnjit Singh second with 2,646 votes. Next were Democratic incumbent Democratic Aldermen Joseph DeLucia received 2,540 votes and Derell Wilson, 2,435 votes.

But just 66 votes separate the next five candidates vying for the final two council seats. If numbers released Tuesday night hold, Republican newcomer Grant Neuendorf, with 2,276 votes, and Democratic newcomer Tracey Burto, with 2,245, would win the seats, retaining Democrats’ current 4-3 majority, including Nystrom, who has a vote on the council.

Newcomer Republican Mark Adams received 2,232 votes, Republican Robert Bell, 2,227 votes, and incumbent Democrat Ella Myles, 2,210 votes.

Republican candidates John Blackburn, 2,135 votes, and Michael Grillo, 2,010 votes, trailed in the race.
