Recount happening Saturday in Preston Board of Education race

Preston — A recount of ballots for the Preston Board of Education race is happening Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. in the lower-level conference room of Preston Town Hall, and the public is welcome to attend.

The recanvas is happening because of the narrow vote margin between Republican candidates Thomas Turner and Charles Raymond: Turner received two more votes than Raymond, a difference of 0.09 of a percentage point.

Unofficial election results from the Connecticut Secretary of the State show that among the six candidates for four spots, the highest vote-getter was Democratic candidate Cindy Luty, with 422 votes, and the second-highest was Republican candidate Cindy Dupointe, with 388 votes.

Democratic candidate Megan Gallant and Raymond both have 364 votes, but Gallant will get on the board regardless of the recanvas results because of minority-party representation rules, meaning the recount is for the fourth spot.

These vote totals are slightly different than what The Day reported Tuesday night, because there were still three more ballots to be counted at that point. Andrew Stockton, Democratic registrar of voters, said two were Election Day registrations and one was an absentee ballot that was filed early and had to be hand-counted.

Town Clerk Jill Keith said election moderator Tom Theve delivered notification of the recount to all six Board of Education candidates, the registrars of voters, poll workers and the Democratic and Republican town committees' chairs.
